Have you ever had the experience of being in full creative flow?  Perhaps while writing, painting, playing an instrument or building something? Where it felt as if the creative energy was moving through you rather than coming from you? You experience the profound transcendence of being fully connected and in flow  through the energy and expression of your Throat Chakra.

The Throat Chakra (Fifth Chakra) is located in the center of your neck at the 4th cervical vertebra.  This chakra is your center for expression and creativity.

Even those who have no knowledge of the chakras have had a direct physical experience of the Throat Chakra in action at some point when they have gotten ‘choked up’.  In this experience, you can feel how powerfully this chakra can control the flow of energy in your body.

Properties of the Throat Chakra

Physical Influences:

Physically, your Throat Chakra influences the neck, throat, larynx, thyroid, jaw, mouth, ears, and cervical vertebrae.

Consciousness Influences:

Your Throat Chakra is the center of will, creativity, self-expression and communication.  It allows you to bring what is inside of you out into the world, giving voice to the self, and allowing creative energies, ideas, visions and dreams to flow and manifest.  Conversely, it also prohibits your from giving voice to yourself and expressing your emotions, creativity and ideas. This chakra also oversees your openness to interaction and communication with others & with non-physical dimensions.

When you allow yourself to be, the Throat Chakra is open. If you are restricting and controlling a part of yourself, you compromise this chakra. Self-doubt, judgment and self-censoring are all acts of control that shut down the throat. This chakra is like an energetic switch that is allowing or controlling; respecting or negating and judging – shutting down or opening energy flow.

This chakra is a very powerful energy center in that it allows or blocks the flow of energy throughout your entire energy system.  When the Throat Chakra is healthy, your vital energy flows and you feel energized. Your energy decreases when this chakra is stressed.

Is Your Throat Chakra in Balance?

Your chakras are rich, deep, complex and many layered energy systems that hold the history of your life experience.  They are constantly interacting with and impacted by the world around you.  As you go through life, each experience affects your energy and health.  A healthy chakra processes and digests these experiences, enabling healthy growth.  Experiences, such as conflicts or traumatic events that are not processed and digested lead to imbalances (i.e. become over or under active), blockages, damage and dysfunction in the affected chakra(s).

Chronic stress, trauma, conflict and unaddressed issues create chakra imbalances that lead to significant physical, emotional and mental health problems. Self-care is therefore of the utmost importance.

Trauma, unresolved conflicts, karmic and past life circumstances, belief systems and/or chronic behavioral patterns cause imbalances, blockages, and/or damage in the chakras.  Over time, unresolved imbalances in the chakra system block energy flow, manifesting as illness, dis-ease or disorder.  When the physical body is under continued stress, the chakras will not work properly.  The key to healing is to address the root cause of the disorder, not just the symptoms. If you are struggling in some area, it is important to find a qualified healer to support you in your healing process.  Various forms of energy healing such as Reiki, Acupressure and Chakra Clearing can help relax, rebalance and open the chakras during a session.  In doing so, it creates the opportunity for the chakra to repair itself, stimulating the healing process.

Here are some self-care tips and tools you can use to strengthen your Throat Chakra.

A general note about Chakra Health

You are constantly interacting with and responding to the world around you.  So are your chakras.  These practices help clear and rebalance the chakras, however they are never “once and done”.  Just as you would not expect your body to remain clean forever after one shower, your chakras are not going stay clear forever after one meditation or one Reiki session. On-going energetic self-care plays is essential for overall chakra health and well-being. In areas where there is imbalance or damage to one or more chakras, more intensive treatment is warranted until healing is complete.

  1. When the throat chakra is balanced, you not only feel it, but there are additional, subtle signs. You have more confidence and find you are a more effective communicator. Also, you may find that you have more vivid dreams and dream recall, are more sensitive to the energies put forth by others around you, and are more at ease with the world in general.
